The ‘pelvic bowl’ contains muscles that function just like all other muscles in the

body. Unfortunately, a common misconception is that you only need to do kegels to

strengthen this area. This is often not adequate and can even lead to more problems.

Luckily, with the guidance of a trained pelvic floor therapist, you can quickly be on the

road to a healthy pelvic floor.


An OT specializing in pelvic floor therapy can you help you through internal examination

performed both vaginally and/or rectally, as needed. Following the exam, the OT can

assess the rest of the body’s response to pelvic floor dysfunction by reviewing habits

ranging from nutrition to posture. This holistic look at one’s lifestyle allows one a more

complete understanding of how everyday actions can impact one’s pelvic health.

Because the pelvic floor is often ignored, or not fully understood, the OT specialist’s
